The Wellesley Visit, Part 2
A Day Too Far
As I suspected, the second day was more of a mistake then anything else. First, there was the meltdown over the phone. Wellesley apparently sits in this giant cellular black hole (I suspect it's because the campus is so large and hilly and woody that signals can't reach from town, much less penetrate the thick stone walls of the old buildings. And to make matters worse, there are no on campus antennas, probably due to aesthetic reasons.). AT&T Wireless keeps showing a roaming signal on campus. Verizon works fine. And unlike normal colleges (or at least Umich, anyway), Wellesley dorms don't come with a hardwired phone. You have to provide your own and sign up for phone service ($17/month + $0.07/min long distance). We must have spent 2 hours at the mall debating, redebating, and debating some more on what direction to take (keep the current phone, get verizon, go with hardwire phone, or no phone). And to make matters worse, AT&T Wireless (which, btw, blows) doesn't give you current charge info. If you make a call yesterday, and want to know anything about it (time spent, to whom, etc), you have to wait until the next billing cycle. After shouting at the operator how this was the most assinine thing I had ever heard of (I note that Verizon, Sprint, and even AT&T Long Distance can provide this basic customer support.), we were left once again at a standstill. After some light shopping at Staples, which turned into a 40 min. back and forth and back and forth, we had some good eating at Sarah's grandparents place (which is where I spent the night with the rest of the fam). At this point, we probably should have just packed it in. Instead we hung about the house for another 3 hours. Got sleepy on the drive back to Wellesley. Had a misunderstanding with the uncle about driving (He got tired. So I took over. But in his sleepiness, he pulled over just over the crest of a hill, before an off ramp, on the shoulder of a major road/highway. So, I've got at best 100 ft. rear visibility, cars trying to exit to the right, no room to maneuver, and a traffic speed of 50 mph. I did the only thing I could do, I floored it, which is not what the uncle likes to see. Nearly redlined it, he tells me afterwards. Anyhoo, he thought I was mad about driving, so he was pissed. And so we had a misunderstanding. I suppose I could have just taken the exit and then remerged, but when that Volvo is headed straight at you at 55mph, there's only 3-5 second to think, and I went with my gut, and accelerated hard.). Had to sit through a minor family argument about the cell phone (again). And of course, I got home at 10:45 pm. Next time I think of visiting, I'm just gonna spend the $250 and rent a car and a hotel room. Screw this hitch a ride with family thing. It's too stressful for my preciously few days off. . . . . . . . . . . On the plus side, I finally got to play America's Army. It's mad hard! Makes CounterStrike seem like a kiddie game of paintball. I loved it.
