Ducks
Yesterday, much like today, was a rainy hazy fall day. Clouds are scraping the tops of the tall buildings, everything turns to a shade of pale blue grey, the wind whips down a cold hint of winter to come, and it's not so much raining as the air is just plain wet. Most people chose to stay indoors, to take out and eat in. But with half a sandwich in my hand, and restlessness in my spirit, I knew where I had to go. Down by the river, the overhead highway providing some measure of shelter, I watched the clouds march slowly across the sky. River lapping beneath my feet (metal grating pedestrian walk), leaning against the rail, I looked to the sky and saw a cloud! Twin "V"s of swarming dots, nearly 5 dozen strong, racing with the wind. My eyes are too poor, the distance too far, to positively ID the flock; but geese these were not, probably ducks. When one flock had passed, then yet another, a mess of 3 "V"s, and another, only 2, and another again. A terrible day for flight, were it not for the powerful tailwind blowing South. I wanted to spread my wings and join them. Instead, I walked back to work.
