The Update

It's been a long time since I've really posted up a bit Let's see if we can't fix that. :: Well, first of all, while this does not directly affect me, it still sucks the big on. Specifically, Gothamist reports on C train line being totally shut down ... for 5 year?! WTF?! So let me get this straight. Me taking photos of the subway: Terrorism. Harassment by police and fellow riders, plus $25 ticket. Homeless man with shopping cart full of wood to burn IN TUNNEL: Normal. Nobody bothers to either notice or harass. I don't know who has won. The Terrorists? The Morons? Maybe both. :: The snow was not bad as I thought it was going to be. It turns out that the city was very well prepared for the blast. Or maybe that it took place over a 12 hour period. The subways, as usual (see above remarks) fared worse then the roads. And parking was suprisingly abundent during the morning and afternoons. Oh, and in storm induced panic, I bought $30 of steaks at the grocery store. Cholesterol city, here I come! Yay! :: I can see why there is some sniping on about Megatokyo. I first read a bit about it as a throwaway line in Scott Kurtz's newsblog on PVPonline. At first it was a mystery, since Scott is so busy self-flaggelating himself that he never gets to the root of anything. Which is bad, because if there's nothing I like more then to watch the trainwreck in action called a flamewar. What I find is a rather dry and logical explanation of how a project was born, got taken over by the creative talent, and then was lost (or at least bought out). Kinda sad, but not the first time this little drama has played out. In reading the comments, looking for some good flame action, instead what I get is a sound piece of advice. Namely, that if the story is strong, you can find the creative talent a dime a dozen. Heck, you can even contract out that work out and not worry about ownership issues. This comment, of course, hinged on the underhanded jab about the story going downhill once the collaboration ended. So, of course, I had to see for myself. 2 days later, and without any sleep, I can't say fully agree. Certainly the pace has slowed down ... considerably. From about June of 2001 to today, only 5 days in "real time" has elapsed. Previous to that, in the first year of the webcomic's existence, several weeks had passed. And the story line has gotten much more ... anime. Which is to say frustrating in its obscurity and over the top melodrama. Little clues are being dropped left and right, but of course at this pace I wouldn't expect the signiifgance to become apparent until my children reach my current age. By then, of course, only 10 more days in "real time" within the comic will have progressed. If you like a little of what you see (and note, the humor quotient goes down considerably after the first year ... the cuteness factor is high and there are a few nice gags after 2002, but they are not as consistant in quality and quantity), just go to the store and buy the compilation. Read, enjoy, and then, 5 years from now, repeat. I know I should have done that, as I've completely wasted two days of my life that I'll never get back. :: Oh, the job thingy is still all up in the air, btw.
