It used to be that some things were copyright, like books or movies or TV shows, and other things, like buildings and parks and public monuments. Apparently, sometime around the year 2000, that all changed. Now everything is copyright. Buildings, people, letters, trees, receipts, legal documents, links, places, the sky, stuff in the public domain, you, etc. What I find particularily stupid about this example, is not that the city of Chicago has copyrighted the park, even though it is a public place paid with taxpayer money by a government organization of a famous landmark. I mean, it still is pretty stupid, ridiculously stupid, in a completely assinine way that makes me wish for a comet to come screaming out of space and put me out of my misery, but that's not it. The truely stupid part is that they let the artist keep the copyright. So any profits or permission to be had goes to the artist not the city which commissioned the art. Let's review this again. We, the city, will pay you a few million dollars for some art (which you won't even make yourself, you just supervise a team of people) which will become famous. And besides the millions we'll pay you, you ALSO get to keep the copyright. While we're at it, would you like us to bend over for you too? Morons. At least they could have done a deal like Paris and the Eiffel Tower, where any profits go back to the city. You know, the people who paid for the thing in the first place.
