Tomorrow I have been invited to attend a birthday party for a friend of a co-worker. I've met the happy couple a few times, and they seem nice. Their child turns 1 (Oh, I hope that's true.).

In Korean society 1 is a big big deal. It's the day when you determine what you're going to do for the rest of your life. Everybody gets dressed in their fancy clothing, baby included. And then you lay these bowls of items (fruit, money, etc.) out. Whichever bowl baby reaches for will determine what they will be when they grew up.

It's a very important day. I think around 6 months you're supposed to inform the kid what the deal is, so they have some time to think about it. Nobody ever does, tho.
