Brooklyn Flickr Meetup: The Gulf
There is this line that seperates Photographers from people that take pictures. It's a subtle line defined by a ephemeral mix of subject, substance, and style. It's not bound by technical details, and yet technical details are an intimate part of the equation. It's hard to define, and even sillier to try and explain, but the gulf between the two remains. Last night, at the Brooklyn Flickr Meetup, I saw the gulf. And it was this table. On my side was me, and on the other side were Photographers. They're busy talking about vision and emotion and story in their photos; my photos tend to be of my lunch. They're discussing the technicals as a tool to get the look, to tell the story they want to tell; I'm just dumping out jpegs and punching them onto the web and moving on. They know the history, know their peers, they have context to the greater body of art out there; I sometimes like to look at Rion's photoblog. It's easy to dismiss it as my general anti-social tendencies, or the fact I could barely hear or be heard over the speaker next to me, or the fact I was only there an hour and half late; but it's really the gulf. I'm not a Photographer, with a capital "P"; I'm just a guy who like to take pictures. I'm comfortable with that. :: Speaking of taking pictures, while I was busy annoying people with my flash, I had the idea to try some side bounce insead of ceiling bounce. It came out better then I expected, I should have taken more. Look for a new set up on the photoblog (not flickr) soon.
